The outer movements of An Awakening are marked by a pronounced meditative character. In contrast, the central movement adopts a slightly more animated tone. Here, the lower instrument introduces a persistent, almost obstinate bass line, upon which a melodic theme is superimposed in a triple canon. The bass itself is later subjected to variation, while the gradual dissolution of the musical layers brings the movement to a contemplative close.
Two recorded versions of the work are available: one for clarinet, bass clarinet and piano, performed by Ronald Van Spaendonck, Jean‑Marc Fessard and Eliane Reyes (Dux label, DUX 0531); the other for violin, cello and harp, interpreted by Erez Ofer, Karolina Maziarz and Rachel Talitman (Harp&Co label, 5050‑28).
