Composed in 2002, An Awakening is a three-movement work in which the outer movements are characterised by a distinctly meditative atmosphere. The central movement, by contrast, takes on a more animated tone: the cello introduces a persistent bass line, above which a melodic theme unfolds in a triple canon. This bass undergoes subtle variations, while the gradual fading of the musical layers gently leads the movement to its close.
The flute version employs the same instrumentation as Mozart’s flute quartet, offering a discreet homage to the classical tradition while firmly rooted in a contemporary language.
The work was recorded by the Bruxellensis Quartet and released on the Kalidisc label in 2006.
