The extreme movements of An Awakening (2002) have a pronounced meditative character. In the middle movement, which is slightly more upbeat, the cello plays a stubborn bass on which a melodic theme is grafted in a triple canon. The bass itself is then varied. The gradual disappearance of the various elements brings the movement to a close. The flute version uses the same instrumental formation as Mozart’s flute quartet.
This work has been recorded on CD by the Bruxellensis Quartet (Kalidisc label 2006).
