Sonata for Baritone Saxophone and Piano

The Sonata for baritone saxophone and piano, commissioned and premiered in 2026 by the saxophonist Geoffroy Massaloux, is an adaptation of the Sonata for bassoon and piano, which was composed in 2021. However, the composer has reworked the material thoroughly to make the most of the technical capabilities of the baritone saxophone, while leaving the piano part unchanged. The piece is structured in three movements.

The first movement gradually builds up a motif with a pronounced rhythmic character. This generates an energetic dialogue between the saxophone and piano, which gives way to a more expressive central section. This section develops through a series of abrupt modulations; however, it is elements from the first section that return to bring the movement to a close.

The second movement is essentially based on a lyrical, sustained dialogue between the piano and saxophone. Modulations introduce sudden changes in colour, revitalising the listening experience.

The final movement begins with a short, rhythmic saxophone motif. The piano quickly joins in, complementing the opening motif both rhythmically and harmonically. A central section then introduces more melodic elements, but the rhythmic and obsessive character remains evident throughout, and the piece ends on a virtuoso note by combining all the elements of the movement.
