Originally composed for piano in 2004 and later arranged for four wind instruments in 2012, Deux Esquisses presents two contrasting yet complementary musical sketches.
The first Esquisse is lyrical and expressive, centred on a melodic theme that unfolds over a flowing legato ostinato. The theme is eventually stated in canon, while the ostinato itself evolves into a more detached, staccato texture. A series of rapid modulations follows, producing contrasting atmospheres in quick succession until the coda, where the main theme is gradually stripped away. A short, grave melodic-rhythmic figure then emerges, quietly heralding the second piece.
The second Esquisse is obsessive in character, driven by the progressive construction of various repetitive patterns. Its rhythmic insistence contrasts starkly with the fluid lyricism of the first, completing the diptych with a sense of restrained energy.
The original piano version has been recorded by Leonardo Anglani on the CD Pièces pour la jeunesse (BLC Music Production 10007) and by Antonio Eduardo on Da areia também se vê o mar (HOME000005).
The wind quartet version received its French premiere on 2 April 2013 at the Conservatoire d’Aulnay-sous-Bois, performed by Jean‑Marc Fessard (clarinet and bass clarinet), Didier Pateau (oboe), Guillaume Demougeot (clarinet), and Elisabeth Kissel (bassoon).
Deux Esquisses (wind quartet version) is also featured on the CD Cosmographies, alongside Chronographie IX, Thrène, Sextuor, Pentagramme, and Cosmographic Mystery, performed by the Quartz Ensemble (Quartziade 014).
