Remembering Steve

violin, viola, cello and piano

Remembering Steve (2013) was commissioned by the Mahler Piano Quartet. Structured in five highly contrasting movements, the work demands great rhythmic precision and refined sound balance from the performers. At the same time, it gives a central place to melody and expressiveness, blending intensity, emotion, and virtuosity.

  • The first movement combines an obsessive rhythmic character with strong melodic expressiveness.
  • The second movement, initially meditative, gradually becomes increasingly dramatic and tense.
  • The third movement serves as a humorous interlude—a light-hearted pause intended to release the tension built up in the previous two movements.
  • The fourth movement revisits the idea of contrast between lyrical melodies and rhythmic ostinati.
  • The fifth movement opens like a fugato but unfolds in a highly free and varied manner, leading to a brilliant conclusion.

The world premiere took place on March 27, 2014, as part of the Concerts de Midi in Liège (Belgium), performed by the Mahler Piano Quartet: Eyal Shiloach (violin), Daniel Rubenstein (viola), Didier Poskin (cello), and Johan Schmidt (piano).
