Labyrinthes for Saxophone

saxophone

Composed in 1997, Labyrinthes for saxophone unfolds in two distinct parts, each exploring contrasting expressive and technical dimensions of the instrument.

The first part opens in a free and rhapsodic style, presenting one of the work’s principal motifs in a manner that borders on improvisation. This leads seamlessly into a passage built on rapidly repeated notes, which injects a sense of rhythmic urgency. The section culminates in a densely woven interplay of the two themes, creating a musical labyrinth in which the listener is invited to lose themselves.

The second part is rhythmically driven and highly virtuosic, evoking a dialogue between the saxophone and an imagined second voice. This is achieved through frequent and abrupt register changes, as well as a particular use of percussive attack techniques, notably slap tongue, lending the instrument a strikingly articulate, almost vocal presence.

This version for saxophone—complementing those for flute and clarinet—is dedicated to Simon Diricq and has been included among the set works for the entrance examination of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris.

It has been featured on two recordings: a DVD entitled Le Monde Sonore de Michel Lysight (Sestarmusic-Maguelone, SSMTV-0013 MAG 111.179), and the CD Belgian Saxophone Music (Dux 1725), performed by Jakub Jarosz (saxophone) and Krzysztof Augustyn (piano).
