Labyrinthes for Saxophone

saxophone

Built in two parts, Labyrinthes for Saxophone (1997) begins with a very free movement that states one of the main motifs. Then comes a theme in rapid repeated notes. This section concludes with an interpenetration of fragments of both motifs. The second part, very virtuoso and rhythmic, evokes a two-part dialogue between the saxophone and an imaginary instrument through the numerous and rapid changes of register and especially through a particular effect of percussive attack mode (slap tongue). The version for saxophone – there are versions for flute or clarinet – is dedicated to Simon Diricq and is included in the list of works proposed for the entrance competition of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris.

This version for saxophone appears on a DVD entitled Le Monde Sonore de Michel Lysight (Leonardo Anglani, Kimberly Egberts, Joseph Grau, Hugues Navez, Johan Schmidt, Ronald Van Spaendonck, Sestarmusic-Maguelone label SSMTV-0013 MAG 111.179).

It was recorded on the CD Belgian Saxophone Music (Dux1725) by Jakub Jarosz (sax) and Krzystof Augustyn (piano).
