Hikari (2011)—meaning Light in Japanese—is built on a series of variations over an obstinate bass line.
The piece unfolds with a resolutely dramatic character, marked by a steadily intensifying tension. The virtuosic demands on both performers are constant, not only in terms of technical skill but also in instrumental color and the delicate balance between flute and piano. The conclusion, though somewhat more serene, still tinged with unease, seems to suggest that the Light shines, even in the deepest darkness.
The French premiere was given in Paris in 2017 by Patricia Nagle (flute) and Éliane Reyes (piano).
