Chronographie VII

alto saxophone or B♭ clarinet and piano

Chronographie VII (2004) is part of a series of works (currently twelve Chronographies exist, written for various instrumentations) that all share the same melodic-harmonic material: D, E, B, G, A.

This material is developed in a wide range of forms throughout the piece. A rhythmic and incantatory character is established from the outset, with abrupt and unexpected modulations continuously renewing the listener’s attention. The tension subsides only in brief moments where the melodic dimension becomes more prominent. The various episodes lead the two performers toward a finale that revisits elements from the opening. Chronographie VII is dedicated to clarinetist Ronald Van Spaendonck and saxophonist Simon Diricq.

The world premiere took place in January 2006 in Caracas (Venezuela), performed by Ronald Van Spaendonck and pianist Serguei Pylenkov.
