The idea for the album Villes was born in 1992, when composer Michel Lysight proposed to publisher Alain Van Kerckhoven the creation of a collection of pieces that would be technically accessible to intermediate and advanced students in music academies. The five contributing composers—Daniel Capelletti, Robert Janssens, Jacques Leduc, Michel Lysight, and Jean-Marie Simonis—all Belgian, were invited to depict a city of their choice through music.
The resulting works are: Avignon (Jacques Leduc), Disneyland (Robert Janssens), Fairy Tale City (Jean-Marie Simonis), Samarkand (Michel Lysight), and Wien (Daniel Capelletti).
Bringing together a variety of aesthetic sensibilities, the collection offers young clarinetists the opportunity to explore a range of musical languages. These works are also frequently programmed by professional clarinetists in recital settings.
