Transitions [parts]

for piccolo or flute, saxophone or clarinet and piano

Transitions (2019) was composed at the request of Nele Tiebout (saxophone) and Peter Verhoyen (piccolo), for inclusion in a CD recording project. The use of the piccolo was no coincidence: Peter Verhoyen, a renowned virtuoso of the instrument, has long been a champion of its repertoire, commissioning and premiering numerous chamber works in order to expand its expressive and technical possibilities. In combination with the saxophone and piano, the piccolo in Transitions contributes to the creation of striking and unexpected instrumental colours.

To increase its accessibility, the composer has also prepared alternative versions: the piccolo part may be performed on flute, and the saxophone part has a clarinet alternative. These allow the work to be performed by more traditional chamber ensembles while preserving the integrity of the musical material.

The piece unfolds in three contrasting movements:

  1. The first movement is characterised by pointillistic, rhythmically intricate writing. Each instrument introduces its own motif, and these motifs progressively interlock to form increasingly complex textures, producing a kind of rhythmic kaleidoscope.
  2. The second movement, featuring tenor saxophone or bass clarinet, adopts a more melodic and dramatic tone. Here, expressive phrasing and harmonic nuance take precedence over rhythmic interplay.
  3. The final movement returns to a more luminous and dance-like character, featuring buoyant rhythmic figures and a celebratory energy. The interplay between the three instruments leads to a vibrant and engaging close.
