Commissioned by the Clap Duo, to whom the work is dedicated, Mercury (2024) is one of a series of pieces illustrating a metal (Cobalt, Tin, Titanium, Platinum, Palladium, Promethium). The first part is based on two ostinati played on the marimba, over which the clarinet gradually builds a long melody. Numerous abrupt modulations give the impression of changing timbres, constantly demanding the listener’s attention. This is followed by a more agitated middle section, with a more pronounced rhythmic and dramatic character, leading to a more peaceful episode. In the final section, the highly rhythmic ostinato of the marimba contrasts with the expressive melody of the clarinet.
The first performance by Charles Michiels (clarinet) and Pierre Quiriny (marimba) took place on 6 February 2025 at the Royal Brussels Conservatory.
