Composed in 2002, Ellipse is above all a short, expressive work that invites the trumpeter to give free rein to their imagination and musicality.
The piece opens with a sustained, lyrical melody that gradually evolves into more intricate rhythmic combinations. Following a brief climax, the opening theme returns, seeming poised to develop further, but ultimately fades away on a long, low note — closing the piece in a gesture of quiet resignation.
Ellipse demands from the performer a refined sense of instrumental colour, unwavering rhythmic precision, and scrupulous attention to sudden and frequent dynamic changes.
