Composed in 2023, the Concerto for Trumpet and Strings was commissioned by Dominique Bodart as a compulsory work for the final of the fourth Théo Charlier International Trumpet Competition in 2024. Structured in three movements, the concerto demands high technical virtuosity from the performers. However, this virtuosity serves the greater purpose of musical expression rather than standing as an end in itself.
The composition is based on two key elements: the gradual construction of various melodic and rhythmic cells that interweave and can be superimposed, and sudden shifts in harmonic colour that constantly engage the listener’s attention. Michel Lysight’s style, deeply rooted in the repetitive minimalism of composers such as Steve Reich, John Adams, and Arvo Pärt, is nevertheless marked by personal characteristics that make his voice distinct and immediately recognisable. His meticulous orchestration ensures that the orchestra is not a mere accompaniment but a true partner to the trumpet soloist. At several points, soloists emerge from the ensemble to enter into dialogue with the trumpet, evoking the spirit of a Concerto Grosso.
The world premiere took place on 2 March 2024 at the Grand Manège in Namur (Belgium), as part of the final of the Théo Charlier International Trumpet Competition, with the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie conducted by Vahan Mardirossian.
