Composed in 2009, Axiom is a trio of short movements for clarinet and bassoon, or alternatively for clarinet and bass clarinet. Each movement is constructed through the progressive development, looping, and superimposition of melodic-rhythmic cells, alongside passages of canonical writing.
Sudden modulations introduce moments of surprise, disrupting expectations and enriching the harmonic landscape. The work demands a high level of virtuosity from both performers, not only in terms of technical execution but also in rhythmic precision and ensemble interplay.
The French premiere took place on 2 April at the Conservatoire d’Aulnay-sous-Bois (France), performed by Jean‑Marc Fessard (clarinet and bass clarinet) and Elisabeth Kissel (bassoon).
