Arcanes [score]

flute quartet or three flutes and violin

Composed in 2005, Arcanes is structured in three movements and may be performed either by a traditional flute quartet (three flutes and alto flute) or by an ensemble comprising three flutes and a violin.

The first movement (Allegro) is driven by the interplay of short, instantly recognisable melodic-rhythmic cells, combined in two-, three-, or four-part textures. These cells are subjected to various forms of development, but the overall character remains breathless and relentless, offering little respite to performers or listeners until the final bars.

The second movement (Moderato) brings greater emphasis to melodic expression, with moments of lyricism giving way at the centre to passages of virtuosic brilliance.

The final movement (Allegro) is based entirely on a single cell, explored through a wide range of techniques, including canons at varying intervals and rhythmic distances. This continuous flow is abruptly interrupted by a short, homorhythmic gesture, which returns throughout the movement in increasingly elaborate forms, ultimately merging with the original cell to bring the work to a cohesive and energetic close.
