Frank Nuyts

Frank Nuyts (b. 1957, Ostend) is a Belgian composer known for blending contemporary classical idioms with elements from jazz, rock, and minimalism. Initially trained in percussion and chamber music at the Royal Conservatory in Ghent, he later studied composition and analysis under Lucien Goethals at the IPEM.

After starting his career in a post-serialist vein, Nuyts shifted in the mid-1980s toward a more eclectic, postmodern style. His piece Rastapasta (1986) marked this transition, showcasing a rhythmic energy influenced by non-classical genres.

In 1989, he co-founded the ensemble Hardscore with pianist Iris De Blaere, merging classical composition with popular music sensibilities. Nuyts has composed five symphonies, numerous concertos, 24 piano sonatas, and several chamber operas. His music is noted for its rhythmic intricacy and structural layering.

A dedicated pedagogue, he has taught composition at the Ghent School of Arts and co-founded the “En Avant Mars” contemporary music festival. In 2013, he received the inaugural Sabam Award for classical music.
