Symphony No. 4 [conductor’s score]

orchestra

Symphony No. 4 unfolds across four movements, each characterised by distinct expressive and structural features, yet unified by a common harmonic and motivic thread.

I. Allegro: The opening movement is underpinned by an ostinato, which gradually accumulates varied musical elements that together establish the harmonic foundation of the work. As the texture thickens, more melodic figures emerge, appearing to contend with the ostinato in a dynamic interplay of rhythmic persistence and lyrical contrast.

II. Andante: The second movement begins with an extended and expressive duet between harp and solo flute—a moment of intimate lyricism, punctuated by subtle interjections from other instruments. As the movement unfolds, the string section takes the lead, guiding the discourse through a passage of growing dramatic intensity, ultimately dissolving into a dreamlike and ethereal conclusion.

III. Moderato – Crescendo: The third movement is grounded in the Lydian mode on E-flat and develops a melodic cell in repetitive loops, reminiscent of minimalist writing. The orchestration proceeds in a gradual ascent, moving from the lower to upper registers, enriched throughout by delicate and colourful percussion, culminating in a powerful fortissimo climax of great emotional and sonic intensity.

IV. Vivo: The final movement is propelled by a relentless ostinato, whose obsessive character drives the music towards a vertiginous and cathartic resolution, bringing the symphony to a close with both force and inevitability.
