Samarkand (1992) is a short and evocative work for clarinet (or viola) and string quartet. Meditative in nature, it offers an invitation to reverie, a moment suspended in time. The solo instrument gradually unfolds a melodic line over an obstinate motif in the strings, establishing an atmosphere of quiet introspection.
This contemplative mood is later interrupted by a more animated central section, in which the instruments engage in lively dialogue, exchanging rapid figurations and employing pointillistic textures and rhythmic intricacy. In the closing passage, the notes of the principal theme are slowly withdrawn, leading the music gently back into the hushed atmosphere of its opening.
An alternative version exists for clarinet or viola and piano, offering the same expressive journey through a different instrumental lens.
Samarkand was recorded by Ronald Van Spaendonck and the Bruxellensis Quartet on the Kalidisc label (2006), in a performance that highlights the work’s blend of intimacy and elegance.
Ronald Van Spaendonck recorded the work with pianist Éliane Reyes on the CD Enigma (Dux label 0531).
