Meditation

two instruments

Meditation is a contemplative piece is written for two instruments: one melodic (a bespoke version exists for each), and one polyphonic, such as guitar, harpsichord, harp, marimba or piano. The work opens with an unchanging rhythmic cell, whose constancy is enriched by shifting harmonic colours. Above this, a long, lyrical line unfolds — a deeply expressive melody that evokes a sense of timeless reflection.

The music conjures a space suspended in time, where the dialogue between the two instruments becomes both intimate and expansive. The harmonic palette, subtle yet rich, supports the unfolding melodic line with delicate transparency, allowing each nuance to resonate.

A version for cello and guitar appears on a CD performed by the Edenwood Duo — Catherine Struys (guitar) and Wouter Vercruysse (cello) — released by A Croch’Notes Production (ACP 004).
