A Tribute to Philip K. Dick

flute, clarinet, harp and string quartet

Composed in 2001, A Tribute to Philip K. Dick is a single-movement work constructed around the alternation of two highly contrasting motifs, each with its own distinct character and tempo. This sharp opposition is established from the outset, but over time the material evolves: first developing independently, then gradually becoming more intertwined, until the two motifs ultimately fuse into a single musical idea. The piece closes in a calm, meditative atmosphere, as the unified motif slowly dissolves.

The title reflects Lysight’s deep admiration for the American novelist Philip K. Dick (1928–1982) and the many philosophical questions raised in his writing — particularly those concerning reality and the ways in which we perceive it. The structure of numerous “Dickian” narratives — with their use of parallel worlds, mise en abyme, pretence, and simulacra — has directly inspired both the form and developmental style of the work.

The instrumentation is deliberately identical to that of Maurice Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro — a rarely used but rich and balanced ensemble — offering a nod to tradition while contributing a contemporary voice to a limited repertoire.

A Tribute to Philip K. Dick has been recorded on the album In the Light of Ravel (Harp & Company, CD 5050-39) by Rachel Talitman (harp), Marcos Fregnani-Martins (flute), Jean-Marc Fessard (clarinet), and the Akhtamar Quartet.
