Symphony No. 3 [conductor’s score]

string orchestra

Symphony No. 3 was composed in 2017 and commissioned by the Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia, to whom the work is dedicated.

The symphony unfolds in four movements, each distinct in character yet unified by the composer’s hallmark techniques: canon writing, rhythmic vitality, expressive lyricism, and unexpected harmonic modulations.

I. Allegro

The first movement opens with a bass line stated by the double basses, soon joined by the cellos. Upon this foundation, a vigorous theme A is introduced by the violas, and successively taken up by the second violins, before the first violins contribute a complementary motif. A sudden modulation introduces theme B, yet the movement maintains its highly rhythmic energy throughout. At the conclusion, theme A returns, now orchestrated for the entire ensemble, bringing the movement to a resolute close.

II. Andante

The second movement is based on a motif A, introduced in canon and passed progressively through all sections of the orchestra. A contrasting lyrical theme B then emerges, unfolding with warmth and expressive nuance. The return of motif A, now in diminution (with halved rhythmic values), creates a subtle transformation. Theme B is superimposed upon it, and the movement concludes with long sustained notes across the orchestra—except for the double bass, which restates motif A alone, as if to anchor the movement in memory.

III. Lento misterioso

The third movement begins with harmonic tones and a motif played sul ponticello, producing a metallic, otherworldly timbre. This mysterious opening gives way to a regular eighth-note ostinato, over which a highly expressive theme unfolds. Initially entrusted to various solo instruments, the theme is gradually embraced by the full ensemble. A sudden modulation lends a more tragic hue, but the movement closes with a return to the original atmosphere—peaceful and dreamlike, marked by the reappearance of the opening motif.

IV. Vivo

The final movement is a rhythmic tour de force, bursting with vitality and exuberance. A brief contrasting interlude offers momentary repose before the original energy resumes. The movement concludes in a blaze of colour and drive, bringing the symphony to a brilliant and celebratory close.

The world première was given by the Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia, conducted by Ektoras Tartanis, on 16 October 2022 during the Lasne Music Festival (Belgium).
