Solve and Coagula (2013) was commissioned by the renowned Tana Quartet. The title draws inspiration from alchemy, referencing the traditional formula of dissolution and recombination.
The first movement, Materia Prima, presents the raw and unrefined musical substance, driven by relentless rhythmic energy. The second movement, Solve, is highly lyrical, comprising fluid motifs that overlap, intertwine, and dissolve into one another. The final movement, Coagula, gathers disparate elements which gradually coalesce into a coherent sonic whole.
The world première was given by the Tana Quartet at the Lasne Festival (Belgium) on 24 November 2013. A revised version of the work was performed by the same ensemble during the Ars Musica Festival 2014, as part of La Nuit du Quatuor.
