Labyrinthes (1997) is the result of a commission from the class of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels for higher flute diplomas. In two parts, the piece begins with a very free movement that states one of the main motifs. Then comes a theme in rapid repeated notes. This section concludes with an interpenetration of fragments of the two motifs. The second part, very virtuoso and rhythmic, evokes a two-part dialogue between the flute and an imaginary instrument through the numerous and rapid changes of register and especially through a particular effect of percussive attack mode.
Two versions for flute are available, one by Marcos Fregnani-Martins on a CD entitled “Belgian Chamber Music” (label Harp&Co 5050-28), the other by Denis-Pierre Gustin (label Cyprès 4602).
