Tin

two saxophones

Tin (2018) was composed in response to a commission from the duo of Bart Van Beneden and Nele Tiebout. A work of striking virtuosity, it demands both technical precision and rhythmic agility from its performers. Structured in a classical ABA′ form, the piece explores evolving textures and motivic development with great energy and clarity.

The opening section (A) is built on the progressive construction of melodic-rhythmic cells, which gradually coalesce into a dense contrapuntal fabric. These interwoven motifs, developed with precision and momentum, establish the piece’s vigorous character from the outset.

The central section (B) introduces a more melodic and lyrical discourse. However, despite its contrasting tone, it retains the underlying rhythmic tension established earlier, ensuring a sense of continuity across the work.

The final section (A′) returns to the material of the opening, but now condensed and intensified. This reprise does not merely repeat earlier ideas, but reimagines them with heightened urgency and structural focus, bringing the work to a concise and powerful conclusion.
