Composed in 2001, the 7 Koans for piano are short, predominantly meditative pieces by Michel Lysight. Each is built upon a single motif or even a minimal sketch, demanding from the performer a refined sense of harmonic colour, beauty of tone, and delicacy of touch.
These fleeting poetic moments may be likened to musical reflections on imagined Zen koans — enigmatic meditation phrases that invite contemplation beyond words. The cycle invites the listener into a sound world of restraint, nuance, and introspective clarity.
The world premiere took place on 7 December 2008 at the Musical Instrument Museum in Brussels, performed by pianist Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden — laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition of Belgium and dedicatee of the work.
The French premiere was given in Paris on 8 December 2011 by Geneviève Girard.
