Gilberto Mendes : Motet em ré menor

for mixed choir

Funny but equally caustic in its political message, the poem by Décio Pignatari is the centre of the most iconic choral work of Latin America.

Beba Coca Cola (Drink Coca Cola) has become an icon among Latin America choral works. Based on a poem by Décio Pignatari, it develops the permutations of the syllabes until the original meaning disappears. The work uses a single chord which expands or contracts, appears or disappears within clusters and aspirated sounds, but remains as the only pitch content of the piece.

The focus lies on the relentless rhythm which develops over a constant metric alternation of 3+2+2+2+2+1 beats. Beba Coca Cola is ostensibly funny but equally caustic in its political message. The last word (cloaca) means sewer.
