Roberto Martins was born in São Paulo in 1943 and, still a child, he came to Santos. He joined Madrigal Ars Viva in 1965 as a singer, studying direction under Maestro Klaus-Dieter Wolff. He is the choir conductor since 1974 and has premiered important contemporary pieces. In 1976, he recorded representative experimental works of Gilberto Mendes, published in 1979 by EMI-Odeon. After that, he was invited by the Culture Departament of the State of São Paulo to teach choir conduction in several courses in the eighties.
He directed many ensembles, and managed to create the Municipal and Children choirs of Campos do Jordão, in 1984, as well as the Municipal Choir and the Popular Choirs Project in Santos, in 1990. He studied piano at the Santos Music College, where he also was a teacher. In 1976, he was invited to the III International Choir Festival at Santiago (Chile) and, after that, he has attended at several latin american meetings. Lately, he has been in La Serena (Chile, 1993) as a teacher, Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina, at Encuentros de Coros del Mercosur (1997/1998) as choir conductor, and at Encuentros Corales Bonaerenses (Final Contest, 1999), as member of the jury.

In 1971, his first work was premiered in the New Music Festival. His works are mostly written for voices. In 1973, he was granted the APCA - São Paulo Art Critics Association prize on Psalms‰, a piece for soprano, choir and
percussion, for the first time granted to an experimental work.
He also writes for instrumental ensembles and music action. He has attended to many composer meetings in Brasília, organized by the Minstry of Education and Culture, National Institute of the Arts and National Institute of Music. He was also a teacher on Introduction to Contemporary Music, History of Brazilian Music and Music Education, at the Santos Music College. As a choir director, he conducted special programs for the 18th International Bienal of São Paulo (1985), Culture TV (1991) and other media.
He is a researcher on latin american repertoire, keeping straight contact with musicians, conductors and composers, and performing ancient and contemporary pieces, especially from the Mersosur area.
