Dominique Dupraz was born in Paris in 1947. He studied harmony,
composition and conducting with the composer Jean Catoire at the Conservatoire
Rachmaninoff in Paris.
With a Doctorate in Musicology from the Sorbonne, he teaches and has researched
and produced an 'Analysis of Musical Semiography' in addition to his work
as a composer. He has directed the Musique en Vivarais and Musique en Vendée
Festivals for several years, giving lectures as well as concerts. He recorded
a disc entitled Visions Sonores in 1981. His works for choirs, symphony
and chamber orchestras have received numerous performances in France, Belgium
and Luxembourg. In 1983 he founded (and directed for seven years) the ensemble
Horizons Sonores XXI.
Since 1983 the musical style of his compositions has become more often 'consonant'
while continuing to evolve in atonal contexts. He uses major and minor triads
as a fundamental part of his compositional technique, and does not hesitate
to give great importance to melody.
Leopoldine for mixed choir a cappella is based on « Les Illuminations » by Victor Hugo. They are 3 glances of the poet on his daughter, at very different times: happiness to be father, the death of Léopoldine, and Hugo?s mourning several years afterwards. The music of the compser and the words of the poet underline this eternal duality : the joy of life and the tragedy of the existence.
